Educating Children in Nepal

Nepal England Education Support (NEES) is a registered UK charity that supports a small school called Vinayak Niketan School, in the village of Thimi in Nepal.

Our Mission

Thimi is a traditional Nepalese village ten miles from Kathmandu where pottery, mask-making and farming are the main employment. Potters throw their pots on manual wheels in the wide Thimi streets, drying the pots in the sun. When there are enough pots they are stacked in huge mounds and surrounded with straw; there are then lit, to fire the pots. As machine pots are now sold cheaply, it has become more difficult to sell those hand crafted in the village. The villagers are now making furniture and looking for alternative employment. Vegetables and rice are grown in the fertile soil.   The farmers get the early morning bus to take their products to the market in Kathmandu or sell it to big hotels.

The people here are not well educated; for financial reasons they need their children to help them in the fields and unless sponsored, girls particularly, leave school early to help in family business. Due to a lack of a proper education and skills the younger generation is forced to do the same job as their parents.

A local young teacher, Surendra Prajapati in 1989, started Vinayak Shiksha Niketan School. He was concerned about the lack of a good education in Government schools and the high fees charged by private schools. Surendra’s aims are to educate the local children of Thimi at affordable fees. Initially he worked from home with one pupil, a slate board and piece of chalk. Now the new multi story building is taking shape, the school has 45 teachers and  810 pupils.

The school uses international sponsorship as a way to assist poor local people in affording education for their children. The school is currently searching for more kind-hearted people to sponsor under-privileged students. Your sponsorship allows the children to be educated in English, Maths, Science, Computer Studies and the local language of Nepali. It also enables students to complete a high school education (10 years).   Culturally, this is important, especially for females as sometimes in Nepal girls have to leave school at 10-12 years of age to help the family; they have no hope of employment or further education. Some of our sponsored students have already completed high school education and are studying medicine, engineering, nursing, teaching and management skills.

We are very proud of being able to educate under-privileged local people and hope this will help them to improve their future.

Stopping Chhaupadi

Often when many girls they reach the age of puberty are banished to isolation huts, this practice is rooted in the belief that menstruating women are impure and can bring bad luck.

Educating Women

Part of what NEES does is educating the women Thimi. This is crucial for empowering the women to reach their full protentional.

Sponsoring Children

The primary goal of NEES is to get more people to sponsor the wonderful children of Thimi. Please click the link at the top for more information.
